DESCRIPTION : BLACK CANARY
In this thrilling origin story of Black Canary, Dinah Lance’s voice is her weapon. And in a near-future world where women have no rights, she won’t hesitate to use everything she has–including her song–to fight back.
Dinah Lance was eight years old when she overheard the impossible: the sound of a girl singing. It was something she was never meant to hear–not in her lifetime and not in Gotham City, taken over by the vicious, patriarchal Court of Owls. The sinister organization rules Gotham City as a dictatorship and has stripped women of everything–their right to work, to make music, to learn, to be free.
Now seventeen, Dinah can’t forget that haunting sound, and she’s beginning to discover that her own voice is just as powerful. But singing is forbidden–a one-way route to a certain death sentence. Fighting to balance her father’s desire to keep her safe, a blossoming romance with mysterious new student Oliver Queen, and her own need to help other women and girls rise up, Dinah wonders if her song will finally be heard. And will her voice be powerful enough to destroy the Court of Owls once and for all?

The weeds climbed from soil to sky on all sides of Robinson Park, shrouding the abandoned grounds from the rest of Gotham City. Dinah Lance had grown up driving past this stretch, watching the once-flourishing park fade over the course of her childhood. The greenery had been the first to go, shriveling up and turning the color of mud. An army of vines came next, emerging from the ground and crawling up every bench, slide, and swing, until soon the whole space was too overgrown to see through. It used to be just another grim sight Dinah passed on her way to school, a reminder of all the ways the Court of Owls had failed their city. But today was different. Today she knew what was hidden inside.
“Please tell us you’re not serious about this.” Dinah’s best friend, Mandy Harper, shuddered as she stared across the street. “That place looks like a hangout for serial killers.”

“In this new take on Black Canary’s origin story, Alexandra Monir gifts readers with a novel that’s just as thrilling as it is insightful. …Black Canary: Breaking Silence was truly a page-turner.” –Geeks of Color
“As a coming-of-age adventure crossed with a superhero origin story and dystopian fiction, it’s a quick, interesting read – one I certainly wish I’d had available as a young adult!” –Mugglenet (the #1 Wizarding World fan site)
“Breaking Silenceis one of those books that when I finished reading, I wanted to buy up pallets of the book and donate them to youth organizations around the world… If you are looking for a good read that has the depth and heart that makes superhero stories so enduring, pick up a copy of Black Canary: Breaking Silence.” –The Nerd Daily
“Well, now I need to read the others in this DC Icons series. A compelling story of resistance, oppression, politics, feminism, rebellion, and revolution. A good story about finding your voice!” –Teen Librarian Toolbox/School Library Journal
“Monir was super smart to reset Dinah’s story in this way and frame her struggle as one of rebellion against a Handmaid’s Tale-like oppressor; it’s a timely change that goes well with current societal issues and a story that incites a lot of fist-pumping moments. The theme of women using their voices as a way to fight the patriarchy is superb—and a nice tie-in to a superhero whose power is literally her voice.” –Forever Young Adult
“I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Breaking Silence… Read this book, add it to your booktalks, and get it into the hands of other readers.” –Mom Read It blog
“The intermingling of old and new DC heroes is artful; Dinah is a powerful protagonist, vibrating with a youthful rage and energy familiar to readers itching for revolution of any kind. Monir never shies away from her tale’s unfortunately pertinent sociopolitical implications, putting a refreshing spin on the feminist dystopia.” –Kirkus Reviews
“Black Canary: Breaking Silence may not be the origin story you expected – in all the best ways. Author Alexandra Monir reimagines Gotham City as a repressive dystopian nightmare and casts Dinah as the feminist heroine we’ve all been waiting for – and that she deserves to be seen as. A fast-paced, twisty adventure with just enough callbacks to the DC world we know to make this new version enticing, you’ll find Monir’s tale hard to put down.” –Culturess
“Alexandra Monir’s Black Canary: Breaking Silence is a fascinating rewrite of Dinah Lance as a high-school teen… a wonderful blend of YA dystopia and superheroes.” –The Tempest
“This prose origin story of superhero Black Canary will thrill you all the way through!” –Ms. Magazine
“The world-building in this book is phenomenal… this book is engaging, entertaining, and a great addition to the DC Icons line of books.” –Between the Shelves
“Monir’s origin story for the most powerful voice in the DC Universe is, at times, thrilling and exhilarating, while also being truly heartfelt and extremely personal.” –FanFi Addict
